Castelot Summer Scripture conference to be held
 June 16-19

by Robert Delaney of The Michigan Catholic
May 23, 2008

Detroit — The legacy of Fr. John J. Castelot continues to live on through this year's Castelot Summer Scripture conference, set for June 16-19 at the Retreat Center at St. John's in Plymouth Township.

The annual conference honors the memory of Fr. Castelot, who was a professor at the former St. John's Provincial Seminary and then at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit.

Fr. Castelot

Fr. John J. Castelot was a renowned scripture scholar, presenter and teacher. He taught Scripture to most of the priests of the archdiocese and, later, others who studied pastoral ministry. Originally from Hartford, Conn., he was incardinated into this archdiocese. Fr. Castelot had a role in the first few Castelot Scripture conferences, although he was both embarrassed and pleased it was named after him. A Michigan Catholic columnist, he died May 14, 1999. The series is named after him to honor his dedication to the Word of God, to God's people, and to the Archdiocese of Detroit.

One of the speakers, Fr. Richard Macey, recalls Fr. Castelot's enthusiasm for the Scriptures from when he had him as a professor back in the early 1970s at St. John's.

"As a lecturer, he was more than a little dry, but when you asked him a question, his eyes would light up and he would just take off," says Fr. Macey, pastor of Our Lady of the Woods Parish in Woodhaven and Fr. Castelot's successor as lectionary reflections columnist for The Michigan Catholic. Fr. Macey recalls that Fr. Castelot "would give you some insights that would not be found in any book."

Joining Fr. Macey as speakers at this year's conference are:

• Fr. Lawrence Boady, CSP, president and publisher of Paulist Press. Among Fr. Boady's degrees are both licentiate and a doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Author of several books, his next will be "The Life and Mission of St. Paul," due out from Paulist Press this year.

• Warren Carter, Ph.D., professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Carter has a doctorate in New Testament from Princton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. His most recent books are "John and Empire: Initial Explorations (T&T Clark/Continuum, 2008) and Matthew: Storyteller, Interpreter, Evangelist (revised edition, Peabody, Hendrickson, 2004).

• Megan McKenna, Ph. D., internationally known author, lecturer, retreat leader and spiritual director. The author of more than 30 books, McKenna earned her doctorate from the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, Calif.

Fr. Macey says the conference should be of interest not only to priests and deacons, but also to lay persons who want to increase their knowledge ands understanding of Scripture..

"This conference has been inviting the best in biblical scholarship from around the country," he adds.

Fr. Macey has a licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and teaches at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and at SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake.

Besides the speakers' presentations, each day's session will include Morning Prayer, Taize Evening Prayer, and daily Mass.

Registration fees depend on which session or sessions a person wishes to attend, and whether overnight accommodations are needed. Some options include meals.
