The Archdiocese of Detroit this weekend will be joining other dioceses across the United States in taking up a special collection at its parishes to help the humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti via Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The archdiocese has 278 parishes and approximately 1.4 million Catholics in southeast Michigan.

Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron has encouraged people of the Detroit area to be generous with their resources and to offer their prayers to those affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake that destroyed the city of Port-au-Prince and left multiple thousands dead. "We live in challenging financial times here in the Detroit area," the archbishop said, "but that never seems to dampen the generosity of the people of this region when they have the opportunity to help their brothers and sisters in dire need."

Archbishop Vigneron will lead a rosary for earthquake victims this Sunday, Jan. 17, following the 11 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Ave., Detroit. More local prayer services for disaster victims in Haiti will be listed Friday on the Archdiocese of Detroit Web site, www.aodonline.org.

CRS is among the first-line responders to disaster scenes and has had a team in Haiti since shortly after the earthquake. Already through its Web site, the Detroit archdiocese has collected $16,000 in donations for CRS. To contribute to relief efforts online, visit www.aodonline.org/Haiti. Donations by check may be made out to "Archdiocese of Detroit" with "CRS Relief" in the lower left memo line, and sent to:
