Members of the Archdiocesan Advisory Board of Catholic Education serve as an advisory group to the Cardinal concerning the needs, policies, priorities, human and financial resources and ongoing planning for all the essential components of Catholic Education. These components are: Adult Faith Formation, Catechetics, Catholic Schools, Family Life, Justice and Peace, and Youth Ministry. Also of importance is the development of financial planning for these components and the ongoing implementation of the vision statement, One in Faith and Knowledge, in parishes and vicariates.
The Department of Education is comprised of the Director’s Office, the Office for Catholic Schools, the Office for Faith Formation/Catechetics, Social Peace & Justice Education, Natural Family Planning Education, Catholic Colleges/Universities, and Campus Young Adult Ministries.
The ongoing faith formation of children, youth, families and adults is at the heart of the daily work of the Department.
Professional services are provided to the personnel who administer parish catechetical programs, Catholic elementary and high schools and Catholic high school athletic programs in the areas of policy, instruction and curriculum, accreditation, certification, teacher openings, sacramental catechesis, textbook selection, ministry to families and adult faith formation.
All information concerning Natural Family Planning is coordinated through the Department of Education.
The Office for Catholic Social Teaching coordinates and designs programs to promote greater awareness and understanding of our Church's social teachings throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit at every level: in parishes, elementary and high schools, youth and campus ministry, colleges and universities, seminaries and continuing formation of clergy/religious/lay ministers. These efforts are complemented by activities promoted by the Office for Catholic Social Action in the Department of Parish Life and Services and other Archdiocesan offices dedicated to various social ministries.
Office for Faith Formation/Catechetics assists administrators, catechists, and teachers in parishes and Catholic schools by offering consultation concerning professional growth opportunities, certification requirements, special religious education, text selection, sacramental catechesis, conscience formation and guidelines for catechesis about human sexuality.
This office also develops policy and curriculum guidelines to support life-long faith formation based in the Scriptures and church teaching that lends to prayer and worship and encourages service.
Natural family planning is a way of life in which couples recognize their fertility and infertility and together decide to engage in or abstain from genital activity depending on whether pregnancy is to be achieved or avoided. The Diocesan Development Program of the USCCB endorses the NFP program.
This office is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the VIRTUS program “Protecting God’s Children”, including oversight of trainers, and dissemination and coordination of training materials, to ensure that the Archdiocese of Detroit is in compliance with its own sexual abuse policy and the USCCB guidelines.
This office coordinates and facilitates the recruitment, training, certification and on-going equipping and encouragement of Youth Ministers dedicated to the faith-development of teen-agers. Support for Youth Ministers is on-going through programs, extensive growth experiences and the networking of Youth Ministers at the parish and vicariate levels.
