Dr. Philip Blosser, professor of philosophy, wrote a review of Cracks in the Crescent, by Hussein Hajji Wario (Bethany Press, 2009), in New Oxford Review (forthcoming); a blurb for a forthcoming book by John Salza, The Mystery of Predestination; and the liner notes for a CD recording of Wendy Holcombe's music, "Memories of Wendy," Adonda Records of Nashville, produced by Harrison Tyner and Don Fowler, March.

Dr. Robert Fastiggi, professor of systematic theology, is executive editor of the 2010 supplement to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, scheduled for publication in June. He presented: overview of the Marian dogmas at SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish, Sterling Heights, Michigan, January 8; "Lay Participation in the Eucharistic Sacrifice," annual conference of the Society for Catholic Liturgy, St. Mary Parish, Greenville, South Carolina, January 30; on Judaism, Orthodox and Protestant Christianity, and Islam, Sacred Heart Parish, Auburn Hills, Michigan, February 24, March 3 and 17; talks to students and faculty, Ave Maria School of Law, Naples, Florida, March 11-12. He has been giving periodic classes for the Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center, Bloomfield, Michigan, and for postulants of Miles Christi Institute, St. Joseph House, South Lyon, Michigan. He served as a panelist for a conference sponsored by Texas Right to Life, Corpus Christi, Texas, February 6.

Fr. Marc Gawronski, adjunct instructor of liturgy and sacraments, presented: a Day of Reflection "On Christian Initiation," Birmingham Bloomfield Vicariate, St. Hugo of the Hills Parish, Bloomfield Hills, January 24; "God's GPS: Understanding Your Life through Prayer, Sacraments and Tradition," Archdiocesan Youth Convocation: Rainbow XXVIII, January 30; and "Initiation and the Sacred Triduum," Lansing Diocesan Liturgical Conference, Davison, Michigan, February 6.

Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, professor of spirituality and systematic theology, presented: "The Role of Women in the Church," Christ the King Parish, Detroit, January 23; "Filled with the Spirit," Day of Reflection for staff of SHMS, February 10; "Sexuality and the Spiritual Life," formation session for MAPS students, March 20; two talks on the "Relationship Between Ordained Priesthood and the Priesthood of the Laity," Office Personnel Day for the Lansing diocese, March 25; and "The Contributions of Women to the Church," First Thursday Dialogue series, Toledo Club, Diocese of Toledo, April 1. She attended a conference by Dominican Fr. Timothy Radcliffe, "Crises and Opportunities Facing the Church Today," March 12; participated in a book promotion in New Jersey for the Call to Holiness series on women's spirituality and for her new book in the series, Weaving Faith and Experience: A Woman's Perspective on the Middle Years, March 23. Her article was accepted for publication, "Jesus' Spirituality as a Pattern for Our Own," St. Anthony Messenger Press.

Dr. Mary Healy, associate professor of Sacred Scripture, spoke on "If You Knew the Gift of God" and "A New Pentecost for a New Evangelization," Institute for Priestly Formation symposium, St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, March 11-14. She presented a seminar "The Art of Interpretation," Augustine Institute, Denver, Colorado, January 13-16; a workshop on the Gospel of Mark, Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, Winnipeg, Manitoba, February 5-7; and an introduction to Catholic teaching on Scripture, staff members of the Archdiocese of Detroit, December 1. She gave these talks: "Discovering the Power of God's Word," Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy, Chicago, Illinois, December 5; "Digging for Gold in the Gospel of John," Legatus, Fern Hill, January 26; "The Vision of St. Catherine of Siena," Siena Academy, Novi, Michigan, January 27; "The Gospel of Mark," St. Thomas áBecket Parish, Canton Township, Michigan, February 15; and "Loving One Another with a True Gift of Self: The Damaging Effects of Misused Sexuality," SHMS, March 20.

Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, preached a retreat to priests of the Diocese of Winona, Minnesota, on priestly holiness, January 4-7, and conducted an in-service workshop for the Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools, Archdiocese of Detroit, "A Synthesis of Christology," January 12.

Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, presented: a lecture series on the Letter to the Hebrews, Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, January-March; three sessions on "Christian Personal Relationships," Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center, January-March; three lectures on the Psalms, University Christian Outreach, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, March; "The Life of St. Patrick," St. Thomas Parish, Ann Arbor, March 17; "The Biblical Basis for Singleness," Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, March 18; "Sexuality and God's Purposes," YES Retreat for High School, March 19; and two lectures on Bible study, regional Gap program of the Sword of the Spirit, March 30.

Fr. Todd Lajiness, dean of studies, gave the annual report to the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (Angelicum), on the status of the aggregation of SHMS and the Angelicum, February 2-7. These meetings facilitate the conferral of the ecclesiastical degrees of the STB and the STL. As a member of the executive committee of the Midwest Association of Theological Schools, he attended a planning meeting for the annual September seminary conference in cooperation with the NCEA and the NCDVD, February 19-21. He presented a Lenten soup-supper reflection, "Conversion: The Embrace of the Father," St. Mary Queen of Creation Parish, New Baltimore, Michigan, February 25, and a Lenten Day of Recollection, "The Lenten Journey and the Sacrament of Confirmation," for parish/ school group, St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Newport, Michigan. March 18.

Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral and systematic theology, published a book review of David Matzko McCarthy's (editor) The Heart of Catholic Social Teaching: Its Origin and Contemporary Significance (Brazos Press, 2009), in Markets & Morality (Spring 2010). He presented "Medical Ethics: Critical Issues," First Thursday Dialogue series, Toledo Club, Diocese of Toledo, March 4, and was guest lecturer on end-of-life issues in the course Pastoral Care of the Dying, SHMS, March 17. He began teaching a spring 2010 graduate course in moral theology for the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, and was involved in planning the St. Frances Cabrini Parish Men's Group, Allen Park, Michigan. He was recently elected as a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology.

He attended a theological conference, "Secularism and the Natural Desire for God," Dominican House of Studies, Washington D.C., February 19-20.

Fr. John McDermott, SJ, professor of theology, published "What Went Wrong with Catholic (NT) Exegesis and Christology? Beyond Mark 10:17-22," Angelicum 86 (2009). He presented "The 'Necessity' of Mary in God's Plan of Salvation," Holy Trinity Apostolate, and "The Problem of Method and Dogmatic Development in Lonergan's Thought," SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake, Michigan. He participated as a consultant in the meeting of the USCCB Committee on Doctrine, Washington, D.C.

Dr. Edward Peters, Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Sacred Scripture, continued his work with the Religious Sign Translation Committee of the National Catholic Office for the Deaf as the Latin consultant for the translation sessions, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, January 29-31. His article critiquing certain terminology as it relates to the restored diaconate was accepted by Chicago Studies, and his review of Msgr. Brian Ferme's History of the Sources of Canon Law was accepted by the Journal of Law and Religion (Hamline University School of Law). He recently joined the colloquium on spoken Latin hosted by the Classics Department of the University of Michigan, and gave interviews on various canonical issues to the Religion News Service, Slate.com and the Drew Mariani Show.

Fr. William Promesso, adjunct instructor of homiletics, led a continuing education course, Providence Hospital, Southfield, Michigan, and Providence Park Hospital, Novi, Michigan. The course uses The Golden Rule as an ethic for interpersonal and cultural sensitivity. For the Year of the Priest, he was one of five Downriver pastors to speak at a shared parish mission, January 30-February 3, on "Beyond Baptism: Preaching with our Lives."

Dr. Janet E. Smith, Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics, gave presentations on Humanae Vitae, the Culture of Life and bioethical issues at: Pro-life Gala, Diocese of Austin, March 27; University of Dallas, Student Life Association, March 26; Southwestern University Medical School, St. Basil Society, March 26; Family Life Office, Fort Wayne/ South Bend Diocese, March 20; Catholic Medical Association, Annual Rose Mass Dinner, Grand Blanc, Michigan, March 13; North Dakota State University, Focus group, March 8; Holy Family Catholic Aid Association miniretreat, Perham, Minnesota, March 6; Living the Catholic Faith Conference, Archdiocese of Denver, Denver, Colorado, February 26; "Hormones R' Us," Madonna University, Livonia, Michigan, February 20; Emcee for Prolife Fish Fry, SHMS, February 19; One More Soul, Dayton, Ohio, February 13; Conference on Life, Kennewick, Washington, February 6; "The Catholic Church's Teaching on Contraception," Archdiocese of Detroit staff, January 15. Fr. Daniel Trapp, associate professor of theology, liturgy and sacraments, gave the winter semester retreat, St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, "The Saints and the Call to Holiness," January 6-10. He presented a Day of Recollection for priests of the Winona Diocese on the "Ministry of Reconciliation," March 26. He was retreat director for the Palm Sunday weekend retreat for seminarians of Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Winona, Minnesota, on "Priesthood and Discernment," March 26-29.

Fr. Richard Cassidy, professor of Sacred Scripture, has blended his sabbatical work on Philippians with marathon training. On April 19, he successfully completed the 2010 Boston Marathon. Father was seeking a finishing time within one hour of his time in the Boston Marathon twenty years ago. While he failed to meet this goal (finishing in four hours, forty-five minutes), nevertheless he achieved the Finisher's Medal. The first "marathon" was run 2,500 years ago by a Greek courier who ran twenty-five miles to Athens from the Plain of Marathon to announce the Greek victory over the Persians. To celebrate this anniversary, a delegation from Marathon, Greece, attended this year's Boston Marathon. Father was among the runners who had the opportunity to converse briefly with the mayor of Marathon and receive a commemorative pin from him.
