Cardinal Adam Maida Lays Hands on Twelve New Deacons
Twelve men were welcomed into the permanent diaconate on October 4, 2003, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. With their wives, families and friends present among the congregation of around nine hundred supporters, Cardinal Maida ordained them to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
The reception of Holy Orders comes after several years of studying here at Sacred Heart. After applying for the process, then taking pre-requisite classes, graduate studies, practicums and parish internships, these men are now ready to serve in the various parishes around the archdiocese. The candidates' wives were closely involved in the formation process all along the way.
The new deacons' duties will include parish administration, religious education, assisting the priest at Mass, administering the Sacrament of Baptism and witnessing marriages. They will also serve the poor in various ministries of charity, which is the main responsibility of a deacon.
